Stephen's Return from Iraq

July 2004
My brother Stephen has returned from his 13 month service in Iraq. Below are some pictures from the welcome home ceremony at Fort Leonard Wood on Tuesday, July 20, 2004. He was part of the "Delay Party", a group of 13 soldiers that returned a week after the other soldiers, so his ceremony was much smaller than the typical welcome home ceremonies.

The band played some patriotic songs as the bus arrived carrying Stephen and the 12 other soldiers. I made sure I was the first to hug him when he got off the bus.
Mom, Stephen, and Me. That's his girlfriend Sharon in the back. She was part of the first group that returned, and so she came back to Fort Leonard Wood to greet him. Here they are listening to a speech thanking them for their service. They were thrilled to be part of the Delay Party since the speeches were considerably shorter. Stephen is in the back row, the second one in.

Quentin F. Veit
October 21, 1931 - June 12, 2004
My grandfather was an extraordinary man who will be missed by his wife, 9 children, 35 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, among hundreds of other friends and relatives. We miss him greatly, but have uncountable memories of his wonderful life.

Stephen was just in the news after an attack on his convoy while relocating from Baghdad to Najaf.
Here is the news article:

Army rushing more armored Humvees to Iraq
By Denis D. Gray, Associated Press Writer | April 25, 2004

NAJAF, Iraq -- Deafening noise, confusion and fear erupted as the roadside bomb slammed into the U.S. Army Humvee, knocking over Spc. Stephen Monti, who was manning a gun in the turret.

"Then we started checking whether we still had our 10 fingers on,"

Monti recalled of the recent ambush south of Baghdad.

Not only had all four soldiers escaped injury, but the vehicle -- which had been fortified by armor plating and bulletproof glass -- came through with just a few dents and a cracked windshield.

"There probably would have been wounds, maybe mortal ones, in your basic Humvee," said Monti, of St. Louis. "Every vehicle that goes out on the road should be 'up-armored.' Your safety is dramatically increased."
